박승빈 연구원은 지역사회발전(community development) 연구의 일환으로 낙후되었거나 쇠퇴하는 도시와 지역사회의 재생을 중점적으로 연구한다. 구체적으로 그는 지역사회가 직면한 여러 사회경제적 문제에 대처하는 앵커시설(anchor institutions)과 지역 비영리단체의 역할에 관심이 있으며 특히 대학의 역할과 대학 주도의 거버넌스에 주목해 연구를 수행해왔다. 그는 최근 연구에서 미국의 토지공여대학(land-grant universities)이 주도하는 대도시 내 낙후된 지역사회의 재생사업의 결과를 정량적으로 분석하고, 이해관계자의 관점에 따라 대학의 노력과 그에 따른 결과를 어떻게 다르게 인식하는지 조사했다. 이를 통해 대학이 도시재생사업을 이끄는 데 주민들의 우선순위와 가치가 대학과 다를 수 있음을 지적하고 비영리단체 주도의 도시재생사업이 다양한 이해관계자에게 이익이 되도록 하는 데 기여했다.
그는 현재 한국 내 도시쇠퇴 및 인구감소 현상을 연구 중심에 두고 이에 대응하는 지역 대학 및 비영리단체의 역할을 탐색하고 있다. 특히 국내 대학이 지역사회 연계 연구와 프로그램을 운영하고 학생들을 그 활동에 참여시킴으로써 낙후되었거나 쇠퇴하는 도시의 여러 문제에 어떻게 대응하는지 주목하며, 대학이 정부, 지방자치단체, 지역 내 다른 기관과 연계한 거버넌스를 구성하여 도시쇠퇴에 대응하는 데 관심이 있다. 더불어 이러한 대학 활동을 촉진하는 정부와 지방자치단체의 역할도 연구한다
박승빈 연구원은 미국 오하이오주립대학교에서 도시및지역계획박사를 받았으며, 고려대학교에서 행정학 전공으로 행정학석사를, 경제학과 정치외교학 전공으로 학사 학위를 취득했다.
Seungbin Park, Ph.D., is a postdoctoral researcher at the Integrated Planning Lab (IPL) in the Graduate School of Environmental Studies (GSES), Seoul National University, and an adjunct researcher at the Environmental Planning Institute at GSES.
His research focuses on community development and urban revitalization. He examines the roles of anchor institutions—universities and university-led urban governance in particular—in addressing socioeconomic challenges in distressed and declining urban areas. His latest work investigated the measurable impacts of land-grant universities’ revitalization initiatives in the United States and the perception gaps among stakeholders regarding universities’ efforts and their outcomes. Through this work, he contributed to developing a framework for urban revitalization initiatives that benefit all relevant stakeholders.
Currently, Seungbin studies urban and population decline in South Korea, exploring the roles of universities and local nonprofit organizations in the processes of urban decline. His emphasis is on how universities engage with local issues, lead and participate in revitalization initiatives, involve students, and collaborate with governments and local nonprofits. He also examines the roles of government in promoting universities’ community engagement.
Before joining IPL, Seungbin earned his Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning from The Ohio State University. He also holds a Master of Public Administration and a Bachelor’s degree with a double major in Economics and Political Science from Korea University.
